We all have at least one book in us. But navigating the publishing phase stops many writers from either starting or finishing their book. The truth is publishing is a business and it’s essential to learn how it works if you want to be a (successful) author. I’m here to guide you through it.

I’ve compiled twelve years in publishing, my experience as an award-winning author and self-publisher, and the most common questions I get from clients into this comprehensive two-hour class that gives you the nuts and bolts of what you need to learn the business of writing and publishing.

Down the Publishing Path
Making a decision about your publishing path is paramount because each option requires something different and also earlier in the process than you might think. Dr. Benoit-Roy will cover the differences between self-publishing, hybrid, and traditional publishing, and what you need for each publishing model, including whether you need an agent and how to get one.

Agents, Publishers, and Contracts
The mystery is in the detail when it comes to signing on the dotted line. Dr. Benoit-Roy will walk you through the most common publishing pitfalls so that your publishing dream doesn’t turn into a publishing nightmare. This includes agreements with agents, hybrid publishers, service contractors, and traditional publishers.

Legal Considerations in Publishing
Learn what red flags to be aware of in terms of defamation, privacy rights, copyright and trademark infringements. Nicole will cover other business considerations for your author business, such as filing a copyright, LLCs, and what’s the deal with AI.

The class will be recorded and sent to all participants. The two-hour class covers a lot
of information in a short amount of time, so you will have availability to rewatch the
video indefinitely as needed. Questions of live participants will be answered at the
​end of the class.
